The 250SE followed in 1965, bringing four-wheel disc brakes and a larger 2.5-litre engine, while retaining the beautifully balanced design of the original W111 Coup'.

In 1968, the 280SE replaced both the 250SE and 300SE Coup'. With its 2.8-litre single-overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine, Bosch mechanical fuel injection and approximately 160 hp, it represented the final and most developed version of the W111 Coup'. The automatic transmission further suited its character, delivering the effortless and refined driving experience expected of a flagship Mercedes-Benz grand tourer.

Produced from 1969 through to 1971, the 280SE Coup' was an expensive and relatively exclusive automobile when new. Worldwide production totalled just 3,797 examples, with only a small number delivered to Australia. More than half a century later, surviving Australian-delivered examples are increasingly scarce, particularly those that have been preserved with such a comprehensive documented history.
